Teaching My Niblings Computer Science
My niblings are my friend’s two daughters, ages 6 and 7 at the time, who call me Tita or Titi Nicole. Tita means “aunt” in Tagalog. As an influential figure in their lives, I wanted to teach them the basics of computer science so that they can have exposure to the subject early. Once they’ve gotten the exposure, it’s up to them if they want to continue learning about the subject or move on to something else. I want them to have a similar, yet improved experience to what I had so that they’re aware of the different possibilities they had access to. No one in my family and friends circle knew about Computer Science. I had no older peers to tinker with or ask advice from. I also didn’t fit the description of your typical geek or nerd, and I wanted to show them that people that look like me and who look like them are capable of having successful careers in software-related fields.
